Portugal crowned UEFA nations league champions
Portugal’s national football team clinched their second UEFA Nations League title on Sunday night, defeating Spain 5-3 in a dramatic penalty shootout after a thrilling 2-2 draw in 120 minutes of regulation and extra time at the Allianz Arena.
The final was an intense clash between two European football giants, with both sides showing attacking intent from the opening whistle.
Spain opened the scoring in the 20th minute when teenage sensation Lamine Yamal delivered a low cross into the box. Portugal’s defenders failed to clear the ball, allowing midfielder Martín Zubimendi to slot home the opener.
Portugal responded swiftly. Just five minutes later, Nuno Mendes equalized with a powerful strike in the 26th minute, reigniting hopes for the Seleção fans.
The tempo remained high, and in the 41st minute, Spanish midfielder Pedri led a quick counterattack, feeding the ball to Mikel Oyarzabal who made no mistake and put Spain ahead once again. The first half ended 2-1 in favor of La Roja.

Determined to turn the game around, Portugal came out stronger in the second half. Bruno Fernandes appeared to score a leveller in the 48th minute, but the goal was disallowed due to an offside call against Ruben Neves, who had provided the assist.
Portugal didn’t let up, and in the 60th minute, Nuno Mendes surged forward again and whipped in a cross that deflected off a Spanish defender, finding Cristiano Ronaldo unmarked to net the equalizer — his second goal in the tournament.
Spain tried to regain the lead in the final 20 minutes. In the 82nd minute, Isco fired a powerful shot from outside the box, but Portuguese goalkeeper Diogo Costa tipped it over for a corner, which ultimately yielded nothing.
Despite efforts from both sides, neither team could find a winning goal in the regular 90 minutes nor in the 30 minutes of extra time.
Portugal showed composure during the shootout. The first three penalties were converted successfully by both teams. However, a crucial moment came when Spanish forward Álvaro Morata’s attempt was saved by Diogo Costa, handing Portugal the advantage.
Bruno Fernandes scored Portugal’s fourth penalty with ease, and Ruben Neves calmly converted the final spot-kick to seal a 5-3 win for the Portuguese.
This marks Portugal’s third major international trophy, following their UEFA Euro 2016 win and their first UEFA Nations League title in 2019. The victory further cements Portugal’s status as a European football powerhouse in the modern era.
With a mix of experienced legends like Ronaldo and rising stars such as Nuno Mendes, Portugal once again proved they can deliver on the biggest stages.
