Six killed, dozens injured in M23–Wazalendo clashes in Eastern DRCongo

At least six people have been confirmed dead and more than 20 others injured following intense fighting between M23 rebel fighters and the Wazalendo militias in Bambo, Rutshuru Territory, in North Kivu Province of the Democratic Republic of Congo. The clashes began on Thursday, May 15, and intensified throughout Friday, May 16, 2025.

The violent confrontations, now entering their third consecutive day, have plunged the area into a deep state of insecurity. According to local reports, the M23 rebels initially held their positions after seizing several key locations in Bambo. However, in a dramatic turn of events, Wazalendo forces launched a counteroffensive early Friday, managing to recapture Bambo after pushing M23 fighters back toward the Kabizo/Butare area — roughly two to three kilometers from Bambo.

A local official who spoke to the media on condition of anonymity confirmed the resurgence of ambush-style attacks from the Wazalendo side, indicating the intensity and strategic nature of the ongoing battles.

Civilians in the affected areas remain in hiding, fearful of being caught in the crossfire. Some residents have reportedly taken refuge in Bambo Hospital, seeking safety amidst the chaos. Many have yet to return to their homes, highlighting the dire humanitarian situation unfolding on the ground.

The current status of Kishishe, another strategic location previously seized by M23, remains unclear. While some reports suggest the rebel group may have withdrawn from the town center, unconfirmed accounts also hint at the possible presence of FDLR fighters in the area.

Clashes have been especially fierce in Bwito, where M23 is now battling not only Wazalendo forces but also FDLR elements in what sources describe as direct confrontations involving heavy weaponry.
